HARBORVIEW HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATION NEWSLETTER
AUGUST 2008
Message from the President It is nice to know we can count on volunteers in our community when we are able to do things for ourselves that save us money. We have a need for a couple of painters (we will not require a talent contest) to paint our pool house in preparation for winter. It should be a fun and short project that could be done on a Saturday morning. We would also like assistance with the installation of our security cameras. We have noticed an infestation of bagworms in our evergreen trees and have sprayed our community trees but suggest that you consider protecting your own evergreens. If you do a Google search on “webworms” you can learn all about them. Enjoy the fall weather that we have already begun to experience.
Harborview Clean-up Day was a success. The board received positive feedback on this project. We want to thank the homeowner who suggested it at our January meeting. We are planning on an earlier date next year.
Labor Day is just around the corner. That means the pool will be closing. The pool will be closed Tuesday, September 2nd. It also means boats must either be garaged or moved off properties. After September 7th boats may not be parked in driveways.
You may not think parking your boat in your drive way for another week or so is not a big thing, but your neighbor may feel the same about leaving his garbage cans out front for a week and another feels that it’s OK to have his car on blocks in his yard for a month or so till he gets it running. Another concern is this: When a boat is in your driveway, many of you block the sidewalk with your car. This means the kids must walk in the street to get around your vehicle.
Neighborhood Watch Kids are back to school; families are back from vacation. It’s time to become active in the Neighborhood Watch Program. Contact Billie Harris at 873-0069 for information.
Vandalism at Harborview We are very disappointed to report that there have been several occurrences of vandalism against Harborview Homeowners Association properties. Rain measuring devices have been stolen, the bulletin board was vandalized, lights at the Porter entrance were destroyed, signs at the shelter house were destroyed and the sensor for the light at the shelter house was stolen. Each resident pays for these destructive acts in one way or another. If you see suspicious activity, please call the police.
Safety Tip PUT YOUR CAR KEYS BESIDE YOUR BED AT NIGHT
Here’s a safety tip from a neighborhood watch coordinator you may not have thought about. Put your car keys beside your bed at night. If you hear a noise outside your home or someone trying to get in your house, just press the panic button for your car. The car horn will sound until either you turn it off.
Next time you come home for the night and you start to put your keys away, think of this: The panic button on your keychain is a security alarm system that you already have and requires no installation. Test it. It will go off from most everywhere inside your home and will keep honking you reset it with the button on the key chain.
It works if you park in your driveway or garage. If your car alarm goes off when someone is trying to break into your house, odds are the intruder won't stick around... after a few seconds all the neighbors will be looking out their windows to see who is out there and sure enough the criminal won't want that! And remember to carry your keys while walking to your car in a parking lot. The alarm can work the same way there.
One person had suggested their Dad carry his car keys with him in case he falls outside and no one is around to hear him. Using the panic button, he can activate the car alarm and you’ll know there's a problem. It could also be useful for any emergency, such as a heart attack, where you can't reach a phone. What a GREAT idea!
SLOW DOWN!!!! Just a reminder, the speed limit in Harborview is 25 mph!! (All of Smithville, unless posted otherwise, is 25 mph.) Our streets are neighborhood streets, not thoroughfares. Children are back to school and look forward to getting outside when they come home. They often forget to stop and look before running into the street. Parked cars sometimes obstruct the view of a child about to cross the street on his bicycle. Please drive responsibly.
Reminder We have a board seat coming available in January. It is important that we have new faces on the board. You chose this community as the one where you wanted you family to live: help make it better.
